WWE SmackDown Live Preview: October 4, 2016
WWE No Mercy is this Sunday. What will be in store for this week’s episode of SmackDown Live after last Tuesday’s World Title fallout?
No Mercy is just a few days away and there are certainly some high-stakes match-ups that will be coming to a head this Sunday in Sacramento. Match-ups including Becky Lynch making the first ever title defense of the SmackDown Women’s Championship against the likes of Alexa Bliss. Bray Wyatt will at long last take on the Viper, Randy Orton. Of course, who could forget the triple threat match for the WWE World Championship between AJ Styles, John Cena and Dean Ambrose? It will surely be a card to watch.
Before we take a look at this week’s edition of WWE’s premier show, let’s recap what happened on last weeks. Much had occurred on last Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown; most notably Dean Ambrose getting his one-on-one rematch for the WWE World Championship against AJ Styles. These two certainly do not see eye to eye as Styles had used a low blow in which to defeat Ambrose at Backlash just one month ago. Styles would ultimately retain after Cena got involved late in the match.
American Alpha would team up with the so-called Beauty and the Man-Beast to take on the Ascension and the Usos in 8-man tag team action. At No Mercy, it will be The Usos versus Heath Slater and Rhyno for the SmackDown tag team championships. The Usos had pinned Slater last week in that match, sending a message that it will not be a repeat performance of Backlash. Orton too, was on a search all throughout the arena for Wyatt and sent a message to him, showing he does not have anything to fear.

WWE World Championship Contract Signing
The main event last week, to no surprise, did not end purely. AJ Styles had attacked John Cena while he was sitting ringside, at the commentary table. Styles knocked Cena down to which he would retaliate. Cena attempted to enter the ring before the referee stopped him. While the ref was distracted, Ambrose had Styles down for a three count. The ref had gotten there late and the phenomenal one was able to kick out. Ambrose then preceded to go after Cena and was henceforth pinned by Styles 1-2-3.
After the match had concluded, all three men went after each other with Cena ultimately coming out on top. Cena would then raise the WWE World Championship over his head. He will look to raise it once more this Sunday for the 16th time, which would tie the record set by that of Ric Flair. A contract signing between these three needs to happen this week for one final promo before the pay-per-view this Sunday. Someone should be put through a table by the end of the night.

Another Orton – Wyatt Promo
Randy Orton had spent much of last week’s episode in search for the mysterious “Eater of Worlds” and self-proclaimed “God,” Bray Wyatt. Orton had initially called out Wyatt for a face to face encounter to open the show, however, Wyatt did not comply. Orton was then on a chase to find him. The search culminated in The Viper attacking Wyatt from behind while in the midst of one of his ever-popular promos.
These two have done nothing the past few weeks, but cut these promos for No Mercy. I wouldn’t expect anything different this week, unless they decide to have Wyatt interfere with one of Orton’s matches again. Will they have Wyatt finally compete in a match this week? He has not competed since Backlash and it is doubtful to see him in in-ring action this week. SmackDown needs to begin utilizing Wyatt in other ways than just simply his on-screen promos. Fans have been wanting to see Wyatt in action and appear to be getting restless after screaming the famous “What?” chant in recent weeks.

Women’s Tag Team Action
Last week, as Becky Lynch was making her way down to the ring, she was attacked on the entrance ramp by Alexa Bliss. This, along with Carmella and Nikki Bella, is the two most notable feuds on Tuesday nights. Also last week, Carmella pinned Bella in tag team action. The match they were scheduled for the week prior, had not even gotten underway due to Carmella’s inability to keep her hands off of Bella. This has been an ongoing rivalry since SummerSlam this past August.
SmackDown has recently favored putting the women’s division in tag team matches as they have done so the past couple of weeks. This week, I would expect another one, but this time pitting the heels against the faces being involved in matches at No Mercy. Bella and Lynch would take on the tandem of Bliss and Carmella. This time, I would expect Bliss to be the one pinning Lynch and further heating up this match-up for Sunday night. Both Carmella and Bliss have been getting the better of their opponents leading up to No Mercy. Expect it to continue.

What Else is on Tap?
WWE’s number one A-Lister, The Miz has continuously screwed the “Show Off,” Dolph Ziggler out of winning the Intercontinental Championship in recent weeks. Whether it be by his wife, Maryse’s distraction or being sprayed in the eyes with some unknown substance, the Miz has retained and walked out champion each and every night he has defended it. Knock the Miz all you want, but he has been arguably SmackDown’s best heel and has certainly brought prestige back to the Intercontinental Championship.
Both men in their hometown of Cleveland last week, Ziggler had offered up a challenge. After continuously losing to Miz, The Show Off decided to ask for one more match. The stipulation here is that if Ziggler loses, he will hang up his tights for WWE. Ziggler has had it with his constant failures and said last week that win or lose, he will be put out of his misery. Will Ziggler finally be the one to be able to defeat the Miz this weekend or will his career be finished? Ziggler may cheat to win if it is the only way.
It was not shown on last week’s episode, however, Baron Corbin and Jack Swagger have had a recent rivalry stemming over the past couple of weeks. Perhaps, this week Swagger will have his debut match on SmackDown, where Corbin will interfere. Swagger versus Corbin would make for a great match at WWE No Mercy on Sunday. Expect to see America Alpha as well this week in action. The Ascension, along with the Usos defeated them last Tuesday, so they may seek some redemption and get back to their winning ways.
