John Cena's WWE Status for 2017 is Reportedly in Question

John Cena’s status with WWE for 2017 is reportedly fluctuating with all his outside media projects.

John Cena hasn’t been around WWE much in 2016. From January to May, it had been due to an injury. He then returned from June to August before taking about three weeks off. After losing the world title match at October’s WWE No Mercy pay-per-view, Cena left again to film the FOX reality show, “American Grit”. His return is tentatively scheduled for a WWE live event on December 26.

Cena being around for the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 33 seems very possible, especially since he missed last year’s shows. There probably would be a decent payday in there too. However, according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, there is concern over the Face That Runs the Place’s status for 2017 as WWE doesn’t know how much he’ll be around. This is due to his outside media projects, which seem to grow by the week.

Recently, Cena got announced as the host of “SNL” for Saturday, December 10. This doesn’t really interfere with anything since it’s a one-off deal, but Variety also reported that the 39-year-old would be part of the movie, “The Pact”. He’s noted as one of the stars of the movie, which would probably take him away from WWE for a chunk of time for filming.

Luckily for SmackDown, the brand has survived without Cena being around. They put on a quality TLC pay-per-view on Sunday, which saw AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose main event for the world title. Eventually, the title scene is going to change from Styles and Ambrose, though, so once that begins, then Cena’s absence may be a bit more glaring.

John Cena will be back in WWE soon, but for how long is unknown. He’ll leave again, which will be another indefinite absence. After that, who knows when we’ll see Cena again, but it’s safe to say he’s officially a part-timer now.
