Karen Aston was named the new women's basketball coach at North Texas on Monday night, less than a week after unexpectedly resigning the same spot at Charlotte following a school-record 27 victories.

Aston, a North Texas assistant from 1996-98, said when she resigned from Charlotte last Wednesday that she wanted to be closer to her family in Arkansas.

She replaces Shanice Stephens, who was fired after going 25-67 over three seasons with a 13-39 record in the Sun Belt Conference. North Texas was 5-25 this season.

Aston led Charlotte to 86 wins the last four seasons, including an NCAA tournament appearance and three WNIT berths. She had agreed before this season to a contract extension through the 2014-15 season.
