No. 10 West Virginia 62, No. 21 TCU 49

West Virginia knew it had to control the tempo to beat TCU.

Madina Ali had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the 10th-ranked Mountaineers to a 62-49 win over the 21st-ranked Horned Frogs on Thursday in the opening game of the Paradise Jam.

TCU came into the game averaging nearly 88 points and 51 rebounds in winning its first three games.

''I thought we did a good job on defense and the boards,'' West Virginia coach Mike Carey said. ''I was proud of our girls and how hard they played on defense. Offensively, we have work to do, but overall I was pleased. They are a very good basketball team.''

Liz Repella added 13 points, 11 rebounds and five steals for the Mountaineers (4-0). Repella and Ali helped West Virginia to a 43-29 rebounding advantage.

''Madina does everything,'' Repella said. ''She rebounds, she scores and just gives it her all.''

Leading 33-29 early in the second half, West Virginia went on a 19-5 run over the next 6 minutes to take control of the game.

Helena Sverrisdottir scored 20 points and Emily Carter added 10 points for TCU (3-1), which couldn't get within 10 after the Mountaineers' run.

West Virginia will play Virginia on Friday while TCU faces Iowa State.

Trailing 16-14 midway through the first half, West Virginia went on a 11-0 run as Ali had six points and Sarah Miles four. The Mountaineers held TCU without a point for over 4 minutes until Sverrisdottir hit a 3-pointer with 4:04 left in the half to make it 25-19.

West Virginia led 25-21 at the half.
