No. 10 Maryland women beat James Madison 80-64
GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico (AP) Lauren Mincy wouldn't allow James Madison to get back into the game against Maryland.
Mincy scored 17 of her 23 points in the second half and Lexie Brown added 13 to help the No. 10 Terrapins beat James Madison 80-64 on Friday at the San Juan Shootout.
''Lauren Mincy was spectacular. She really led the way,'' Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. ''I like the way she put the team on her back. She was extremely difficult to guard.''
Leading 11-10, Maryland (6-0) scored 11 straight points over the next 3:22 to take control. Brene Moseley had five points during the burst. The Terps led 40-27 at the half.
''We came out aggressive from the tip, I thought our defense and rebounding set the tone,'' Frese said.
James Madison was able to cut the deficit to nine on two free throws by Destiny Jones with 14:18 left, but that's as close as it could get.
Precious Hall scored 29 points and Toia Giggetts added 18 for James Madison (4-1). The Dukes had no one else score more than five.
Lauren Okafor, who led the nation in offensive rebounds (7.25 per game) and was second in overall rebounds at 16.3, was held to just three total boards.
''Being able to shut down Okafor was key in them not being able to get anything easy,'' Frese said. ''They're a really talented team. It's a game of runs and in the second half we did a nice job keeping our composure.''
TIP-INS:
The Terps are 8-1 against James Madison, including winning the last eight games. Before Friday's contest the two teams last played in 2008. ... Coming into the contest, James Madison was ranked seventh in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (21) and 10th in overall rebound margin (plus-16.8). Maryland outrebounded the Dukes 40-28.
