Will Brooks: 'I think those guys are scumbags'
Will Brooks and Alex Oliveira continue their war of words after their UFC Fight Night 96 contest.
Mixed martial arts is a sport full of big personalities and often manufactured rivalries. The issues between Will Brocks and Alex Oliveira are anything but fabricated as the two continue to take shots at each other after their UFC Fight Night 96 bout.
The situation started when Oliveira missed weight by five pounds; hitting the scale at 161.5 pounds compared to 156 for Brooks. Instead of removing himself from the fight, Brooks stepped in the cage and was stopped in the third round after pushing through a broken rib which occurred in round one. Oliveira would then taunt Brooks after the fight, which resulted in Brooks throwing his mouthpiece at the Brazilian competitor. Since then the two fighters continue to speak ill of each other.
“I think those guys are scumbags. I think they’re unprofessional and I think they’re cheaters,” Brooks said while speaking to Brett Okamoto on the 5ive Rounds Podcast. “In my opinion, at the end of the day, I think they purposely missed weight. I think they did that on purpose. I think they were looking for an advantage. For you to miss weight by five, almost six pounds — that’s something different. You’re looking for an advantage. And then during the weigh-ins and you’re doing all this stuff, you guys aren’t acting professional like you really wanted to make the weight. They accomplished their goal and got their advantage.”
Brooks didn’t have to take the fight. He could have withdrew but elected to fight and receive his show and win money, along with 20 percent of Oliveira’s purse. In some situations the UFC has granted the fighter both his show and win money along with the purse. Brooks wasn’t sure what the outcome would be so he decided to step into the cage and face an opponent that has also competed at welterweight. To make this situation even worse, both men train at American Top Team.
“I’ll still train at ATT. I won’t think twice about it,” Oliveira said as reported Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting. “If he tries something there, things will get ugly. I always train there, and that won’t change because of the things he did this week. That’s between us. We’re two men, and if he started it, he has to deal with it. I’m a cool guy; I won’t do anything if he doesn’t. I don’t like this, but he crossed the line.”
Brooks on the other hand doesn’t want Oliveira at the gym:
“I promise you as long as I’m at ATT you and your scumbag cheating coaches and manager won’t step foot in the gym,” Brooks tweeted before deleting the post (reported by Cruz of MMAFighting).
