UFC's Zak Cummings misses weight, TUF China bout canceled

Published Feb. 28, 2014 10:20 a.m. ET

It was a long trip wasted for Zak Cummings, whose disastrous weight cut left him so far away from the welterweight limit that his scheduled opponent Alberto Mina declined to meet him at a catch weight. As a result, the UFC's TUF China Finale will go on with eight bouts.

Cummings, who trains in Missouri, never even made it to the official weigh-in scale. He was eight pounds over the divisional limit, according to the UFC.

The 29-year-old had previously fought as high as 205 pounds, but joined season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter as a middleweight and then cut all the way down to 170 for his official promotional debut, when he stopped Ben Alloway with a D'arce choke last August.

Cummings is 16-3 in his career.

It was to be the UFC debut for Mina, a Brazilian who is 10-0 with eight first-round stoppages.

The UFC announced that Mina would be paid his fight purse as well as his win bonus.

The TUF China Finale takes place at CotaiArena in Macau, China. The eight-fight card is the smallest since UFC 72 in June 2007, which also featured eight bouts for a show set in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
