UFC Mexico Results: Dariush Grinds Out a Decision Over Magomedov
In what was a pick-em fight according to the Vegas odds, Beneil Dariush grinds out a victory to end Rashid Magomedov’s 12-fight win streak at UFC Mexico.
Beneil Dariush has been very high on people’s radar for some time now. He is 4-1 in his last five with UFC wins over Daron Cruickshank, Jim Miller, Michael Johnson, and James Vick during that time.
His most recent performance was first-round destructive KO over an undefeated James Vick at UFC 199, bouncing back from a submission loss to Michael Chiesa. Dariush would like to keep this streak going with a win over a streaking Rashid Magomedov.
Rashid Magomedov has been on a tear recently winning 12 straight. He is 4-0 in his UFC career with three decisions and one finish in that span. He owns wins over Tony Martin, Rodrigo Damm, Elias Silvério, and Gilbert Burns. Magomedov would love to launch himself further up the lightweight top-15 with a win over a top Beneil Dariush.
As the first round starts, both Beneil and Rashid trade kicks and start to measure each other up. Neither inflict much early damage as they clinch against the cage. Groin shot from Magomedov interrupts the minimal action, but Dariush seemed only slightly bothered by it. Magomedov turns up the pressure late with a big body kick and finishes the round with a takedown, but Dariush comes away with the round 10-9.
Round two starts with more pop as Beneil tags Magomedov early, he found his range early in the second. The technical matchup continues for a while with Dariush controlling the pressure.
Dariush once again controls the clinch as he has most of the fight as the fans show their displeasure. Magomedov just has no answer as Dariush controls him against the cage. The round ends the same way, clear cut stanza for Dariush. 20-18 after two.
The final round opens with an exchange of body kicks, which gets a slight grin from Magomedov. He needs a finish badly, and he certainly seems awake enough to search for it.
Dariush ties him back up against the cage but Magomedov is fighting back a lot harder against the cage. He’s got some work to do if he wants to keep this 12-fight winning streak alive. Dariush’s superglue clinch is still too much as Herb Dean separates them.
Magomedov is clearly the fresher fighter as this time he turns the tables and puts Dariush on the fence. But, as the theme has been with this fight Dariush turns him around and pins him against the cage. They exchange good shots as the horn sounds and crowd boos them back to their corners. Split round but Dariush will likely pick up the decision.
The judges are in agreement as Dariush gets unanimous decision victory. The scorecards read 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 and Magomedov’s 12 fight win streak comes to a halt. Dariush is now on a two-fight win streak and moves himself up the lightweight rankings.
