UFC Fortaleza: Kelvin Gastelum Takes On Vitor Belfort
The UFC Fight Night on March 11 will take place in Fortaleza, Brazil, and Vitor Belfort will battle Kelvin Gastelum on that night.
Combate initially reported UFC Fortaleza’s first contest.
After a dominant victory over Tim Kennedy last weekend, Kelvin Gastelum will stay at middleweight. In his next appearance, he will take on fading legend Vitor Belfort in March. Gastelum has won two straight fights (while losing one in between with his weight), and Belfort has been TKOd in both of his last two appearances.
Kelvin Gastelum proved yet again that he is more than capable of competing at middleweight when he returned to the division last Saturday. In his career, Gastelum is 8-0 at middleweight plus his four exhibition victories on The Ultimate Fighter. Gastelum was forced to return to middleweight after badly missing the welterweight limit in November, which pulled him from the promotion’s New York debut.
Vitor Belfort tore through the middleweight division in 2013, defeating Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold, and Dan Henderson consecutively with brutal head kicks. At the time he was also the poster boy for Testosterone Replacement Therapy, which was banned before the title shot he received against Chris Weidman. Weidman defeated Belfort in the first round, and since then, the Brazilian is 1-2 with a knockout over now-retired Dan Henderson.
It does seem like Gastelum is taking a step back after defeating Kennedy. Our matchmaker suggested that he should take on quickly-rising Krzysztof Jotko. Perhaps that will happen down the road if Gastelum sticks to 185-pounds.
UFC Fortaleza has yet to be formally announced by the promotion (aside from the date being saved for a fight night), but it will reportedly take place inside the Northeast Olympic Training Center of Fortaleza, Brazil.
