UFC Fight Night Hamburg results: Gustafsson grinds out win over Blachowicz
Alexander Gustafsson got a much-needed win over Jan Blachowicz at UFC Fight Night in Hamburg.
At UFC Fight Night in Hamburg, Germany, Swedish light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson returned to the cage to fight Jan Blachowicz. The second-ranked Gustafsson came into the bout looking for a win and a shot at the light heavyweight belt once more after losing a title fight to Daniel Cormier at UFC 192.
Gustafsson is also looking for his first win in the UFC since 2014, when he defeated Jimi Manuwa, and end a streak that has seen him go 1-3 over his last four fights.
Gustafsson grinded his way to a decision win, taking Blachowicz to the ground and chipping away at him with elbow shots. All three judges scored the fight 30-27 in favor of Gustafsson.
Gustafsson said after the fight that he was looking to finish the fight in the first-round but was unable to, a credit to Blachowicz’s toughness.
While Gustafsson sorely needed a win, and got one, some will discredit it by pointing out that Blachowicz was undefeated, but anyone can get a win.
Now what Gustafsson has ahead of him is next. There is a bit of a log jam at the top of the light heavyweight division. Daniel Cormier is the champion and Anthony Johnson got the title shot, or so we think, by defeating Glover Teixeira at UFC 202.
Jon Jones’ status is holding up the division, and if he were to be reinstated after reportedly being cleared of wrong doing in the drug test that pulled him from UFC 200, he could be the next fight.
The UFC could move ahead with Cormier and Johnson, and if Jones is slated to return, a rematch of his epic war with Gustafsson could be the bout to make with a shot at the title looming for the winner.
