UFC 207: Ariel Helwani Hints at Ronda Rousey vs. Amanda Nunes
UFC superstar Ronda Rousey might be making her return to the Octagon at the end of the year against champion Amanda Nunes according to Ariel Helwani.
MMA Fighting’s respected reporter Ariel Helwani stated the following: “Looking more + more like Rousey’s return will be finalized this wk. Perhaps v. soon. 12/30 (UFC 207) x Nunes.”
It will be a year and change when Ronda Rousey returns to the cage if this pairing comes to fruition. Of course, Rousey has not fought since brutally losing her title to Holly Holm last December.
Amanda Nunes, unlike the past two women’s bantamweight champions, has stated that she will hold out and wait for Ronda Rousey’s return. Some might say this is a smart decision based on recent history, with both Holly Holm and Miesha Tate failing to defend their titles.
One person that is not happy about this situation is the outspoken contender Julianna Pena. She called Rousey’s likely automatic title shot “baloney” on The MMA Hour. Pena has also turned down contender fights according to Dana White with the hopes of receiving a title shot.
The MMA world will be going through a historic stretch if this fight comes true. UFC 205 has Conor McGregor in the main event alongside two other epic title fights and might just be the greatest card ever. UFC 206 is in Canada and does not have a main event just yet despite having the light heavyweight title on the line (Georges St. Pierre is most likely going to take that spot). Then the promotion possibly ends 2016 with Ronda Rousey.
The rematch between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum will also be going down on the New Year’s Eve weekend card. Their first fight ended with an incredible submission by Fabricio Werdum in Mexico City. Cain Velasquez’s cardio did not seem to be up to snuff on that night, but this fight will be at sea level for what it’s worth.
