UFC 205: Donald Cerrone and Robbie Lawler to Throw Down
UFC 205 has added its Fight of the Night, as Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone’s fan-friendly styles will clash in November.
UFC President Dana White revealed the news on Cleveland radio station 92.3 The Fan this morning.
Is there a more exciting possible matchup on the UFC roster? Donald Cerrone owns the most post-fight bonuses in ZUFFA history with an unbelievable 18. Robbie Lawler owns five post-fight bonuses, but also participated in the last two “Fight of the Year” battles against Johny Hendricks and Rory MacDonald, and possibly won the 2016 Fight of the Year against Carlos Condit.
Donald Cerrone called for lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez after winning his third fight at welterweight, then signed a new contract with the UFC. He won’t receive his title shot and will stay at welterweight, but he will partake in what may become the best card of the year.
“Cowboy” looks like a new fighter at welterweight, putting on brilliant striking performances against Patrick Cote and Rick Story after submitting Alex Oliveira. His division change and excellent 2016 run came after a quick loss against former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.
Robbie Lawler was 4-3 in his first UFC run from 2002 to 2004, then returned to the promotion in 2013 after a sub-par run in Strikeforce. Lawler tore up the welterweight division, earning a title shot after just three wins. After losing his first title shot, Lawler capitalized on his second opportunity, and defended his belt twice.
“Ruthless” lost his title against Tyron Woodley in July after a surprising first-round knockout. If Lawler does not get back to title contention, fun fights like this are certainly a viable option for the brawler.
Also reported for the card is a fun light heavyweight bout between New York native Gian Villante and Marcos Rogerio de Lima, according to de Lima’s Instagram. De Lima is 3-1 in the Octagon with three first round finishes. Gian Villante is an even 4-4 in the Octagon with two “Fight of the Night” victories.
UFC 205 is the New York debut for the promotion set for November 12 in Madison Square Garden. Although no fights have been officially announced, Chris Weidman is set to fight Yoel Romero, and Tim Kennedy welcomes Rashad Evans to the middleweight ranks.
