Two months after son beat cancer, Joe Lauzon picks up emotional win

Mashantucket, Conn. — What a moment for one of MMA's good guys.

Just a few months after his newborn son beat cancer, Joe Lauzon picked up a victory of his own with a doctor's stoppage TKO of Michael Chiesa at 2:14 of the second round Friday at UFC Fight Night on FOX Sports: Souza vs. Mousasi. Making it even more special was the amount of Lauzon's hometown Massachusetts fans who made the short ride to Connecticut to see it.

The crowd was behind Lauzon (24-9) from the start, but the first round was extremely close. Both Lauzon and Chiesa landed big shots and knees in a final flurry after some masterful work on the ground.

The second round belonged to Lauzon. He swarmed Chiesa with punches and knees and opened a massive cut over Chiesa's right eye with one of those knees. Referee Herb Dean recognized it very quickly and called in the doctor to take a look. The doctor decided Chiesa should not continue and stopped the fight.

Lauzon came in just outside the UFC's official lightweight contender rankings, but should garner some votes after this performance.

Chiesa (11-2), a former "Ultimate Fighter" winner, remains a force to be reckoned with at 155 pounds, with his only other loss coming to Jorge Masvidal.

Joe Lauzon consoles Michael Chiesa after Lauzon was declared the winner due to a stoppage from a cut to the head of Chiesa.
