Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson wants to face Robbie Lawler at UFC 205

It seems nearly impossible to deny Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson a title shot following a shutout performance over No. 1 welterweight contender Rory MacDonald on Saturday night in Ottawa.

Thompson defeated MacDonald over five rounds to earn his seventh straight victory while knocking off yet another top contender in the division.

Now following wins over MacDonald and former champion Johny Hendricks in consecutive fights, Thompson appears poised to face the winner of the upcoming UFC 201 main event pitting champion Robbie Lawler against challenger Tyron Woodley.

While Thompson gladly would face either one so long as the title was on the line, he believes it's Lawler who will come out on top, and that should be his next fight inside the Octagon.

"I would rather fight Robbie Lawler and I think Robbie Lawler's going to win (his fight). He's stayed active, Tyron Woodley hasn't. Maybe a little bit of cage rust in there. Tyron's been known to slow down later on in the rounds and Robbie Lawler, he gets stronger as the rounds go on," Thompson said at the post-fight press conference in Ottawa.

"I see Robbie Lawler winning that fight and would love to fight him, hopefully in New York City would be a good place to do that. I think Robbie Lawler would be the guy."

Thompson's dream date is Nov. 12 at Madison Square Garden when the UFC lands in New York City for the first time in a card that's expected to be one of the biggest of the year.

Considering Thompson's win streak and the victories over MacDonald and Hendricks, it appears he's cleared all the hurdles necessary to finally get his first crack at UFC gold.

"I finished Jake Ellenberger in the first round, Johny Hendricks in the first round, and one of the toughest fights I ever had was with this guy sitting to the right of me," Thompson said, pointing at MacDonald. "So I want that title shot, baby, yes."
