Ronda Rousey hints at future retirement plans: 'Definitely soon'

Ronda Rousey drops another hint on her plans after her UFC 207 title fight against Amanda Leoa

Earlier this, reigning UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes predicted it would take her less than one round to finish the returning Ronda Rousey at UFC 207.

Rousey, to her credit, took these comments in stride while giving her own take on the champion’s prediction

“Yeah, well she kind of has to say that, because everyone knows she gasses out in the second,” said Rousey during her most recent appearance on Conan. “So she has to tell herself that, ‘It’s gonna happen first round.’ What else is she gonna tell herself?”

This was a rare glimpse at the former champion, who essentially stepped away from the spotlight after her second round TKO loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 in November 2015. While fans were happy to see Rousey back in the limelight, the woman known as ‘Rowdy’ revealed they shouldn’t get used to it.

“I don’t really have to [more media appearances],” said Rousey. “I’ve done a lot of learning in this last year and I’ve learned that the views I get or the money I make really doesn’t mean anything for me or my happiness. Now that I know the women’s division is secure, I don’t have to do that anymore. I choose not to.

“It’s not really something that I get a kick off of. Like, ‘Ooh, I went to spend 12 hours at ESPN and talk sh*t all day.’ That’s not really what I want to do. I want to play World of Warcraft.”

With Hollywood screaming her name, fans are also expecting UFC 207 to be one of, if the not the actual last time Rousey steps into the Octagon. Rousey, of course, was a little more coy when discussing her future retirement plans.

“I don’t think after this fight,” Rousey. “But definitely soon.”

Since Rousey’s emotional loss to Holm , the UFC’s 135-pound women’s division has seen two more champions crowned. First Holm dropped the title she won to Rousey’s longtime rival Miesha Tate after succumbing to a fifth round rear naked choke at UFC 196. Fast forward three months and fans saw Nunes crumple Tate in the first round at UFC 200, taking her belt in the process.

Nunes (13-4) initially earned her shot at UFC gold after earning decision over dangerous striker Valentina Shevchenko on the same card that saw Tate won her title. Prior to that performance, ‘The Lioness’ earned back-to-back stoppages over former title challenger Sara McMann and MMA veteran Shayna Baszler.

UFC 207 will go down on December 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
