Robbie Lawler: UFC athletes looking to get into movies 'were never fighters'
With new owners WME-IMG at the helm, UFC's star fighters like Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor may be on the cusp of more movie opportunities. Welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, however, says any current UFC athlete who is looking to make a name for themselves in tinsletown is a fake fighter.
"Those guys were never fighters in the first place," Lawler recently said.
"Some people can branch off and do multiple things but I'm a fighter first and always will be. That's what I got in this business for."
"Ruthless" defends his title against Tyron Woodley next month at UFC 201 in Atlanta, which is why the news of the UFC's sale doesn't really mean much to him.
He is focused on the business of fighting more than the fight business. As could be expected, Lawler isn't planning on leveraging the UFC's new ownership's connection to Hollywood.
"I'm not too worried about that," he continued.
"I'm just concentrating on beating people up and the other stuff is just icing on the cake.
"I just gotta stick to the basics, which are grinding everyday and making sure my skills are sharp so I can hold onto this belt and keep beating people up."
