Raphael Assuncao out; Urijah Faber waits for new opponent on Brazil card

BY Damon Martin • February 3, 2015

Another main event has fallen by the wayside as top-ranked bantamweight contender Raphael Assuncao has been forced to drop out of his rematch against Urijah Faber on March 21 in Brazil.

Sources close to the matchup confirmed to FOX Sports that the change to the main event bout has been made after reports surfaced from Combate in Brazil that Assuncao was out.

Assuncao was pushing the timetable for a return to action after suffering a broken ankle in training recently that put him on the shelf for several weeks.

It seems the healing process wasn't finished enough in the fighter's ankle to allow him to move forward with a training camp to prepare for a bout with Faber in just more than two months' time.

With Assuncao out, Faber is left waiting for an opponent for the upcoming show in Rio de Janeiro.

Through the first five weeks of 2015, the UFC has already suffered five separate changes to main events in scheduled cards for the first three months of the year. 2014 marked a particularly injury-riddled year for the promotion, and unfortunately 2015 is off to a similar start.
