Pettis injures elbow; Barboza to fight Jury in Chicago instead

Published May. 8, 2015 12:29 a.m. ET

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis has suffered an elbow injury in training forcing him to withdraw from his fight against Myles Jury at FOX UFC Fight Night in Chicago on July 25.

Edson Barboza has stepped up and will replace Pettis in the fight with Jury.

The announcement was made via "FOX Sports Live" on Thursday night.

Pettis was returning to action for the first time since losing the 155-pound title to Rafael Dos Anjos in March.

Pettis suffered the injury in training this week and he's expected to undergo surgery on his elbow in the coming days.

Sources told FOX Sports that Pettis is expected to be sidelined several months, but the official timeline for his return won't be determined until he begins rehabilitation.

Barboza steps up to accept the fight with Jury after a tough loss in his last fight to Michael Johnson in February. The loss for the Brazilian was preceded by victories over Bobby Green and Evan Dunham.

FOX UFC Fight Night is headlined by a bantamweight title fight pitting T.J. Dillashaw against former champion Renan Barao after their past two scheduled rematches were scrapped due to injury over the past year.
