Melendez, Sanchez's epic war

Published Oct. 19, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Last month at UFC 165, Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson paired off in one of the best fights in recent memory. Saturday night at UFC 166, Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez took to the Octagon and one-upped the light heavyweight championship scrap, putting on a fight that many are calling one of the greatest fights in UFC history.

Despite being tabbed as a Fight of the Night contender heading into Saturday night’s card, Melendez and Sanchez managed to exceed expectations.

They started fast and never let off the gas, spending the full 15 minutes slinging leather, neither man giving an inch. Down two rounds, Sanchez was told he needed a finish before the final round began, and “The Dream” nearly got it, blasting Melendez with an uppercut midway through the third.

As the round came to a close, the lightweight warriors planted their feet, firing hands through the final horn.

Though the above highlights are fun to watch, this bout is one of those contests you have to go back and watch in its entirety at least once — per day — for the next month.
