Luke Rockhold won't sit and wait for a shot at the UFC title

Following a dominant win over Michael Bisping just a couple of weeks ago, Luke Rockhold's future with the UFC was secured when he signed a new eight fight deal with the promotion.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the contract to UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani after holding a meeting with Rockhold earlier this week.

White met with Rockhold to not only seal the deal on a new contract, but also to discuss his future with the organization.

Rockhold has been on a tear ever since he suffered a knockout defeat in his UFC debut to Vitor Belfort. He's gone 3-0 with two submissions and one knockout victory while sky rocketing into the top five of the middleweight division rankings.

While Rockhold still holds out hope that he may fight for the title in February if something unfortunate were to happen and force Belfort out of his fight with Chris Weidman, chances are he'll have to sit and watch as a spectator.

What won't happen, however, is Rockhold sitting and waiting for the winner of that fight.

White says that Rockhold will get a 'big fight' for his next trip to the Octagon, but the former Strikeforce middleweight champion is not going to sit and wait for either Weidman or Belfort. The title is still Rockhold's ultimate goal but after missing so much time in the last few years due to various injuries, the San Jose based middleweight wants to stay active and keep plowing through the best middleweights in the world.

Maybe Rockhold gets the winner of the upcoming UFC 183 main event between Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz?  Whatever the case may be, Rockhold is definitely going to be in the UFC for several years with his new deal in place and a very bright future ahead.
