Lewis, Browne on weight; one fighter misses the mark at UFC Fight Night in Halifax
The heavyweight main event is now official for Sunday night in Halifax as both Derrick Lewis and Travis Browne both hit the scales at the early weigh-ins on Saturday morning.
It's rarely an issue for a heavyweight fighter to miss the mark, but Lewis will occasionally have to cut weight to get down to the 265-pound limit for the division.
This time around, Lewis came in at 262 pounds, a full four pounds under the limit with a one pound allowance in a non-title fight in the heavyweight division.
Meanwhile, Browne was at 241 pounds, which means he'll be giving up a significant amount of weight when he steps into the Octagon with Lewis on Sunday night.
In the co-main event, Johny Hendricks makes his middleweight debut after suffering through a series of brutal weight cuts to get down to 170-pounds in his most recent outings. Hendricks last fought at UFC 207 in December where he missed weight and afterwards said that his days as a welterweight were over.
On Saturday, Hendricks came in at 185.5 pounds with a smile on his face — a far cry from the look he had when stepping on the scale the last time he fought.
His opponent, Hector Lombard came in at 182-pounds — a full four pounds under the middleweight limit for a non-title fights, which likely means he was either well under weight all week or he somehow miscalculated his cut and shed more pounds than what was necessary.
Either way, Hendricks and Lombard are both on point and now meet on Sunday night in a pivotal matchup for each of them.
There was only one fighter off weight on Saturday and that was bantamweight newcomer Gina Mazany, who accepted a late notice fight with Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann.
Mazany came in at 139.5-pounds — three and a half pounds over the bantamweight limit for a non-title fight — and she will now forfeit 20-percent of her purse to McMann for the infraction.
