'Jacare' Souza vs. Yoel Romero set as co-main event for FOX UFC Fight Night in New Jersey
A long-awaited middleweight bout between Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza and Yoel Romero has been rescheduled as the new co-main event for FOX UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Rockhold on April 18 in Newark, New Jersey.
The bout was announced via Ariel Helwani on UFC Tonight on Wednesday.
The fight was originally scheduled as a feature bout for UFC 184 on Feb. 28, but 'Jacare' came down with a case of pneumonia and was forced to withdraw from the card entirely.
The UFC opted to keep the matchup together and move it to a different date. Now 'Jacare' and Romero will meet in April instead.
Both fighters have made a steady climb up the middleweight rankings since coming to the UFC from Strikeforce.
'Jacare' most recently took out Gegard Mousasi by submission while Romero finished Tim Kennedy en route to this new matchup being made.
'Jacare' vs. Romero joins an already stacked card headed to New Jersey with the main event pitting former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida against Luke Rockhold. With two middleweight bouts headlining the card it's likely the most impressive winner from this show will face the winner of the upcoming title bout between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort.
