Eddie Alvarez calls out Conor McGregor; Dana White and Khabib Nurmagomedov respond
Eddie Alvarez may want a piece of Conor McGregor, but Dana White and Khabib Nurmag0medov aren’t having any of it.
It’s safe to say UFC lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez is itching for a fight with featherweight champ Conor McGregor.
Taking to Twitter, Alvarez called out the 145-pound for a superfight on the upcoming UFC 205 card on Nov. 12 in Madison Square Garden.
Let's do this @TheNotoriousMMA I'm ready !! Your futures not bright enjoy this one while it last . #ItsAllOver

McGregor (20-3), was last seen avenging his previous loss to welterweight rival Nate Diaz at UFC 202 last month. The man known as ‘Notorious’ was previously scheduled to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for his belt in March before a broken foot forced the Brazilian to pull out of the title fight. As a result, Diaz stepped in on short notice and went on to submit the Irishman at UFC 196.
So with his business with his Diaz taken care of for the time being, McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh and UFC President Dana White revealed they were hoping the featherweight champ would drop back down to lightweight and challenge Alvarez.
McGregor initially revealed he wasn’t impressed enough with Alvarez’s win over dos Anjos to warrant a match-up at 155-pounds. However these plans seemed to have changed. McGregor will enter this contest with 18 career (T)KOs, including six under the UFC banner and a record 13-second knockout over former champion Jose Aldo at UFC 194.
Alvarez (28-4), also a former Bellator, Bodog and MFC champion, was crowned the 155-pound champion after finishing then-champion dos Anjos with strikes in the first round of their title fight at UFC Fight Night 90 in July. Not long after, Alvarez stating he was hoping for a fight against the winner of the second fight between McGregor and Diaz.
The Philadelphia native previously earned his shot at the belt with back-to-back decision wins over former Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez and former UFC champ Anthony Pettis. He will enter this title fight 22 career stoppage wins, including 15 by way of (T)KO.
But one person not too keen on Alvarez challenging the 145-pound champion is lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Almost immediately after Alvarez called out McGregor, the Daghestani took to Twitter to respond.
Everyone know who is the real Eagle you're both bunch of chicken your daddy @danawhite protect you One of you going to be my food soon ???????????????? https://t.co/ZPvICQWGi4

Hey @Ealvarezfight checkmate you don't have much time let's do this @ufc
— khabib nurmagomedov (@TeamKhabib) September 21, 2016
Nurmagomedov (23-0), a Sambo world champion, is currently riding a seven-fight win streak inside the Octagon. In his most recent effort, “The Eagle” decimated Darrell Horcher en route to a second round TKO at UFC on FOX 19 this past April. This marked his first appearance inside the Octagon since April 2014. The Dagestani holds notable wins over dos Anjos, Abel Trujillo, Gleison Tibau and Thiago Tavares.
Not soon after Nurmagomedov responded to Alvarez, UFC President Dana White took to Twitter to reveal McGregor wasn’t in the cards for Alvarez’s next fight.
@kylemuir17 @TheNotoriousMMA @Ealvarezfight not true it's @TeamKhabib
— Dana White (@danawhite) September 21, 2016
That settles that, apparently. UFC fighters can try making their own matches over Twitter, but ultimately, it’s Dana and company who have the final say.
