Demian Maia breaks down how he submitted Carlos Condit in under 2 minutes
UFC welterweight contender Demian Maia did what no other UFC fighter had been able to do before when he submitted former interim champion Carlos Condit in the first round of their main event fight at UFC Vancouver a couple weeks ago.
Not only did Maia become the first UFC fighter to finish Condit via submission, he also did it relative ease. The former middleweight was immediately able to take the fight to the ground -- despite the 10,533 people in attendance knowing that was his goal -- and when he got it there, he surprised us all by making “The Natural Born Killer” look like an amateur.
Fan fans see rear-naked chokes nearly every weekend, but many can’t conceptualize the amount of effort it takes to goad an opponent into the perfect position, which is why hearing Maia, himself, and fellow BBJ guru Ryron Gracie explain the intricacies of the move is so incredible.

Maia and Gracie admit that many of the steps look easy, but there are many different maneuvers at work that keep an opponent on their toes.
Maia is easily one of the greatest grapplers to ever grace the Octagon, so it’s no surprise he made submitting one of the greatest fighters of all time sound like a walk in the park.
