Cormier vs. Gustafsson to headline UFC 192 Oct. 3 in Houston
We already had a match up, and on Saturday we got a date for the next UFC light heavyweight championship bout. On October 3, champion Daniel Cormier will defend against former world title challenger Alexander Gustafsson in the main event UFC UFC 192.
The fight will take place in Houston, near Cormier's home state of Louisiana. Cormier expressed excitement about the fight in a statement released on the UFC Fight Night broadcast, calling Gustafsson a great martial artist and saying he's looking forward to fighting near home.
For his part, Gustafsson said, "bring it on." Gustafsson has lost two out of his last three fights, including a first round knockout loss to Anthony Johnson in his most recent bout.
After former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was stripped of his belt, the division was thrown into a bit of disarray, however. Cormier fought Johnson for the vacant belt earlier this year, after losing his previous bout to Jones.
Both Gustafsson and Cormier have dealt with serious knee injuries in the past year, that have delayed bouts of theirs. It will be interesting to see how their legs hold up to another training camp and fight, as well as to see whether Gustafsson has been able to recover this fast after the brutal beating he took after getting caught by Johnson in his last fight.
