Brendan Schaub officially announces move down to 205 pounds
Former "The Ultimate Fighter" finalist Brendan Schaub will shed quite a few pounds later this year as he makes his move down to the light heavyweight division.
Schaub has toyed with the idea lately, but officially confirmed this week during his "Fighter and the Kid" podcast on FOX Sports that he will make the move down to 205 pounds later this year.
Some lingering injuries have kept Schaub on the sidelines since his last fight -- a loss by TKO to Travis Browne at UFC 181 in Dec. 2014 -- but it appears he's made up his mind that his days as a heavyweight are over.
"As far as the fight game goes, I've dealt with some injuries as far as my neck, went back into training, it gave me some issues so we decided to take a little more time off," Schaub said.
"The plan is 205 and I will fight in 2015 at 205, light heavyweight."
Schaub has gone just 2-4 over his last six fights in the UFC, so winning is paramount no matter what weight class he competes in next. The Colorado native will have to work some weight off; he hit the scale weighing 244 pounds for his last fight.
Schaub is convinced he can cut the weight and try his hand at 205 pounds later this year.
Schaub isn't going to call anyone out for his first matchup, but says the transition will take place for his next bout.
"Potential matchups? No idea, no clue," Schaub said. "I'm sure you guys have better ideas than me. That's the plan."
While he's still not sparring due to his ongoing injury situation, Schaub has been working out with former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, preparing for a showdown in April against Luke Rockhold for the main event of the FOX UFC Fight Night card in New Jersey.
Schaub says he will also be trying out new coaches in the coming weeks before he finally starts making the move down in weight.
