Brendan Schaub: 'Jon Jones is the Michael Jordan of the UFC'
There's a new captain of the Jon Jones fan club, you guys. UFC heavyweight and The Fighter and the Kid podcast co-host Brendan Schaub broke down just how good he believes the UFC light heavyweight champion is, on Monday's podcast episode.
"He's our Michael Jordan," Schaub said of Jones.
"I don't think we'll see another Jon Jones. He's the Michael Jordan of the UFC...He's the best of all time. There's no one better. "
Seeing Jones out-wrestle two-time Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier last week at UFC 182 cemented the matter for "Big Brown." According to the heavyweight, Jones is the best because he routinely does things that just don't make sense.
"He's doing stuff that you're not supposed to do," Schaub said.
"He's the best we've got."
Schaub is so high on Jones, that he things "Bones" could move up to heavyweight and take out the best contenders that division has to offer, as well. "I think he destroys [Fabricio] Werdum," Schaub said of Jones taking on the interim UFC heavyweight champ.
"Werdum is not a power puncher. He's not going to knock [Jones] down. He's not going to take him down...[Jones] might submit him. Look at what he did to Vitor Belfort, who is a black belt. Look at what he did to [Lyoto] Machida, who is a black belt. Granted, Werdum is a different black belt."
And Machida and Belfort were blown up middleweights fighting Jones. Schaub did say that he thought his own most recent opponent, Travis Browne, would offer a more difficult challenge for the 205 pounder, because of his length.
"The thing about Travis Browne is he's a little bit more explosive, and he's taller, he's longer," Schaub said.
"So, I think Travis Browne gives [Jones] one hell of a fight."
Schaub surprisingly did not seem to think that the UFC heavyweight champ, Cain Velasquez, would pose any serious threat to Jones, however. "They asked [Jones] would you fight at heavyweight, and he goes, 'yeah, I'll fight Cain right now.' I think he beats Cain," Schaub said.
"I've got to be honest, I think he beats Cain. I think he could have troubles with a guy like [Junior] Dos Santos who hits a little harder and is hard to take down...I like his chances against Cain."
