Bird Association with Chael Sonnen

Published Nov. 12, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

You’ve heard it here first! Chael P. Sonnen calls “Little” Nogueira a chicken… and Roy Nelson a pterodactyl.

In the lead-up to his co-main event scuffle with Rashad Evans at UFC 167, the FOX Sports crew pick “The American Gangster” Sonnen’s brain with some light-hearted word association with birds and their UFC roster counterparts.

Surprisingly, the fighting pride of West Linn, Oregon’s train of thought in this oddball situation makes almost perfect sense. For example, Anderson Silva is a hummingbird because he dances around with odd movements then lances in with a strike. A little more out there, Sonnen is asked “Angry Bird” and he fires back “Nate Diaz”, the resident lightweight and sometime welterweight “Prince of Mean Mugging”. There are a few real curveballs in the mix like Sonnen’s answers for the “dodo”, “Daffy Duck”, and a “parrot”.

Spoiler alert, Sonnen does not pick himself as a “bald eagle”. That luxurious avian predator goes to UFC President Dana White, seemingly for their similar hair cut. As for Sonnen’s selfie, the 29-13-1 fighter chooses a “vulture”. Not to get all sophomore in psychology, but Sonnen dubbing himself a desert scavenger sounds a little depressing.

On the other hand, Sonnen picking his co-host Kenny Florian as a penguin and/or a pigeon is for some reason thoroughly delightful.
