Bantamweights pair off in Brisbane

Published Sep. 30, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Former WEC bantamweight championship contender Takeya Mizugaki is on the comeback trail, having put together a win streak for the first time since he had the stretch that made him a worthy title challenger back in 2009. He’ll try to extend his three-fight run on Dec. 7, when he fights Nam Phan at the UFC Fight Night event in Brisbane, Australia.

The UFC announced the pairing over the weekend.

Mizugaki has conquered Erik Perez, Bryan Caraway and Jeff Hougland in consecutive outings, with all of those victories coming via the judges’ scorecards.

The matchup is a departure from standard UFC booking which usually matches winners. While Mizugaki (18-7-2) has recently found success, Phan has had trouble finding consistency, having lost four of his last six bouts. In his last bout, Phan lost a unanimous decision to Dennis Siver. The defeat dropped the Ultimate Fighter season 12 cast member to 18-11 overall.

The event airs from the Brisbane Athletic Center and features a heavyweight main event of Mark Hunt vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
