Stan Wawrinka Wins U.S. Open
Kudos to Stan Wawrinka for winning the U.S. Open. Now, he is only a Wimbledon short of a Career Grand Slam.
I’m sure that most people, myself included, didn’t think that we would be talking about the possibility of Stan Wawrinka getting a career Grand Slam before Andy Murray. While most people would agree that Murray is the better player with the better career, it’s very impressive that Wawrinka can turn in the types of big matches that he is consistently able to have to beat Novak Djokovic. He is 3-0 in Slam finals while Murray has a very high number of losses in Grand Slam finals–eight–on his resume.
Can Wawrinka get another major title? It’s without a doubt possible. We will have to see what the fall and the offseason hold but Wawrinka, right now, would have to be looked at as one of the favorites in Australia.
On reason he might not is that he’s 31. Not to say that tennis players don’t accomplish a lot of good–Federer has reached multiple finals in his 30s and reached the 2015 U.S. Open finals at 34. Look at what Andre Agassi did in his 30s.
Wawrinka has won a major in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Will he do it in 2017? My personal guess is no. That is, however, premature speculation. For now, let’s enjoy the fact that he won this major in a very impressive effort. From being down match point in the third round to Dan Evans of Great Britain to defeating Novak Djokovic for the title. A great tournament for Wawrinka.
