DOHA, Qatar (AP) Spanish seeded players Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez were second-round casualties at the Qatar Open on Wednesday.

The eighth-seeded Lopez was upset by Bosnian qualifier Mirza Basic 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Basic, who is ranked 138th and is primarily a Challenger-level player, reached the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow as a qualifier last year - the only ATP-level tournament he played in 2017.

The seventh-seeded Verdasco, currently 35th-ranked, was eliminated by the 39th-ranked Andrey Rublev of Russia 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Rublev, 20, will face Borna Coric of Croatia in the quarterfinals.

''Today I won the really tough match,'' Rublev said. ''I think in the third set I was quite focused, was quite calm and not showing emotions. That was when I started playing a little better.''

All the statistics of the match favored Verdasco, including that he won an overall 90 points to 86 for Rublev, and posted 12 aces to only three for the Russian.

But Rublev took the final service break in the seventh game of the third set and went on to save two break points to progress.

Coric, 21, progressed to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia.
