Sela, Karlovic win opening matches at New York Open
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Sixth-seeded Ryan Harrison, the last champion of the Memphis Open, beat fellow American Donald Young 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Monday in his first-round match in the New York Open.
The ATP tournament moved from Tennessee to Long Island after four decades and Harrison picked up right where he left off last year.
No. 8 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, who lost to Harrison in the 2017 Memphis final, was upset 6-4, 6-4 by Dudi Sela of Israel.
Ivo Karlovic of Croatia edged American Jared Donaldson 6-4, 7-6 (4) behind 20 aces, and Frances Tiafoe rallied to beat 17-year-old Sebastian Korda, the Australian Open boys' champion, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in an all-American match.
The top four seeds all received byes. U.S. Open runner-up Kevin Anderson of South Africa is No. 1, followed by Americans Sam Querrey and John Isner, and France's Adrian Mannarino.
