Report: Former Spain players back planned boycott

Published Sep. 20, 2010 4:23 p.m. ET

Former Spain players Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez are reportedly supporting the planned boycott of Spain's Fed Cup team by its players due to a perceived lack of support from their national federation.

Local media said Monday that Sanchez Vicario and Martinez issued a statement that denounced ''the general apathy shown by the federation toward women's tennis in recent years.''

Fifty-one other women players also signed the statement. The boycott is scheduled to begin in Spain's World Group II series against Estonia in February.

The federation says it is committed to women's tennis and plans to put ?200,000 into the sport.
