Philipp Kohlschreiber to lead Germany against Poland

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:20 a.m. ET

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) Philipp Kohlschreiber will lead Germany against Poland in the Davis Cup playoffs despite a stress fracture in his right foot that forced him to miss the Olympics and to retire from his first-round match at the U.S. Open.

The 27th-ranked Kohlschreiber surprisingly appeared at the U.S. Open, only to quit against Nicolas Mahut.

But he was in the team to play Poland named Tuesday by captain Michael Kohlmann. The other three players are Florian Mayer, Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Brands.

The winner of the Sept. 16-19 best-of-five series on clay in Berlin will remain in the 16-team World Group next year.

Germany's rising talent Alexander Zverev declined to play, as did Dustin Brown.

Poland named Kamil Majchrzak, Hubert Hurkacz, Lukasz Kubot and Marcin Matkowski.
