Nadal rallies vs. Kohlschreiber
Rafael Nadal is undefeated in 19 matches on hard courts this year after coming back to beat 22nd-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 and return to the U.S. Open quarterfinals.
He will not, however, play Roger Federer next.
The second-seeded Nadal, who counts the 2010 US Open among his 12 Grand Slam titles, beat Kohlschreiber on Monday night in the fourth round.
''It was very, very tough conditions out there. Very humid,'' Nadal said. ''I sweat too much tonight.''
Their match ended about 2-1/2 hours after Federer was upset in straight sets by 19th-seeded Tommy Robredo, Nadal's quarterfinal opponent. Had Federer won, he and Nadal would have played each other for the 32nd time — and first at Flushing Meadows.
Against Kohlschreiber, Nadal faced only one break point, and saved it. Nadal has yet to lose a service game in the tournament.
Fourth-seeded David Ferrer moved into his eighth straight Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory over No. 18 Janko Tipsarevic.
Ferrer hit 46 winners in a match that lasted three minutes short of four hours on a humid night at Flushing Meadows.
The Spaniard made a Grand Slam final for the first time earlier this year, when he lost to Nadal at Roland Garros.
He has been at the quarterfinals or better at every Grand Slam since the start of the 2012 season.
Richard Gasquet overcame a match point and 39 aces from big-serving Milos Raonic to make his second Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (9), 7-5 victory at night.
No. 8 Gasquet came in with a 1-15 record in Grand Slam fourth-round matches. He'll face fourth-seeded David Ferrer in the quarterfinals.
No. 10 Raonic's 39 aces were third most in US Open history. He had match point at 8-7 in the fourth-set tiebreaker, but Gasquet came to the net and Raonic couldn't get a passing shot by him. The match went 4 hours, 40 minutes on a steamy night in New York.
Gasquet's only previous fourth-round victory in a Grand Slam came at Wimbledon in 2007. He had lost 10 straight fourth-rounders since.
