Jeremy Chardy upset at German Open

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) Maximo Gonzalez upset fifth-seeded Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) in the first round of the German Open on Monday.

Other seeded players in action advanced. Third-seeded Pablo Cuevas beat Halle champion Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-3 as he looks to add to his titles in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Sixth-seeded Nicolas Almagro beat qualifier Jan Satral 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in his debut on the tour. Grega Zemlja won 6-1, 6-2 against wild card Marvin Moeller, who was playing his first professional match.

Qualifier Thiago Monteiro beat Mischa Zverev 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Nicolas Kicker beat Thomas Fabbiano 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 while Paul-Henri Mathieu downed Gerald Melzer 6-4, 7-6 (5).
