Gael Monfils goes airborne for French Open's wildest shot attempt

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:35 p.m. ET

We know Gael Monfils likes to try crazy shots, but he may have outdone himself Thursday at the French Open.

The No. 23 seed Frenchman was playing in front of his home fans against unheralded Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in a second-round match on Court Suzanne Lenglen. With the match well in hand in the third set, Monfils found himself on the defensive end of a point against Struff.

Then this happened:

Unfortunately, as you can see, he did not successfully pull off the circus shot. Still, A for effort.

If the replay doesn't do enough to make you appreciate the try, here's a screen grab of Monfils completely parallel to the ground, forever frozen in time:

Translation: "Gael, you're a very sick man." Indeed.

Monfils finished off Struff 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the third round and, theatrics aside, is looking like a potential sleeper at his home-country Slam. His best-ever showing at Roland Garros was a semifinal bid in 2008.
