Family Circle begins with two upsets

South African Chanelle Scheepers upset No. 13 seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 6-4, 6-4 and American Vania King upset No. 16 seed Verna Dushevina 6-4, 7-6 (7) in the first round of the Family Circle Cup on Monday.

Jill Craybas also advanced, beating crowd favorite Shelby Rogers of Daniel Island 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Rogers, a one-time Family Circle ball girl, presented flowers to champ Jennifer Capriati during the trophy ceremony in 2001.

No. 11 seed Peng Shuai beat American qualifier Sloan Stephens 6-2, 6-1, No. 12 seed Julia Goerges moved into the second round with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Olga Govortsova and 14th-seeded Bethanie Mattek-Sands beat qualifier Alexandra Stevenson 6-2, 6-1.
