De Bakker, Troicki win in Thailand
Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands and Viktor Troicki of Serbia earned straight-set wins in the first round of the Thailand Open on Monday.
The sixth-seeded De Bakker shook off a poor start to beat Marc Lopez of Spain 7-5, 6-0. The seventh-seeded Troicki, a 2009 finalist, defeated Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland 6-3, 6-1.
''He played pretty well. I had some problem finishing the shots at the beginning,'' De Bakker said of Lopez. ''Then at 2-5, we got new balls and it was much better and I began to have more confidence. Then it started going really well.''
The 22-year-old Dutchman will meet Daniel Brands of Germany, who downed Illya Marchenko of Ukraine 6-3, 6-4.
''He has big serves. It will be tough,'' De Bakker said. ''Hopefully I can get them back and play like the way I ended the match today.''
In Monday's other first-round match, Florent Serra of France rallied to beat Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-4.
On Tuesday, fifth-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina will play Olivier Rochus of Belgium in his first match since being sidelined with a wrist injury in January.
No. 1 Rafael Nadal and the three other top-seeded players have first-round byes.
