Colbert: 'Breakups are the ultimate performance-enhancing drug'

Published Jul. 24, 2014 4:13 p.m. ET

That whole breakup thing is actually working out pretty wonderfully for Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki.

The sports stars, who had been dating since 2011, broke off their engagement in May when McIlroy ended things in a reportedly brief three-minute phone call. The split might have come as a shock, but it's doing wonders for their respective careers, as Stephen Colbert confirmed in an entertaining two-minute segment on Tuesday's "The Colbert Report."

On Sunday, McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug as he won the 2014 British Open on the very same day Wozniacki won the Istanbul Cup — her first win in nine months. The successful coincidence brought out the best in Colbert, who commented that the two were in a "sixth stage of grief: winning an international sports tournament."

Colbert also added perhaps the best line of the bit, saying "breakups are the ultimate performance-enhancing drug."
