Austrian Davis Cup captain quits

Published May. 23, 2011 7:38 a.m. ET

Gilbert Schaller has announced his retirement as captain of the Austrian Davis Cup team by the end of the season.

In a statement released Monday by the Austrian tennis federation, Schaller says he wants ''to put all my energy into coaching of young talents.''

The 42-year-old Schaller, who was ranked a career-high 17th as a player in 1995, became captain in 2007 but failed to lead Austria past the first round of the World Group.

Austria lost 3-2 to France in March and will meet an as yet unknown opponent in the play-off series in September.

The federation says it will first talk to the team's key players and then present a new captain for the 2012 season ''within a couple of weeks.''
