Angelique Kerber: Day 1 Results from WTA Finals
Angelique Kerber is the world number 1 in women’s tennis. The German tennis star opened up the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore with a victory.
Angelique Kerber is the favorite at the 2016 WTA Finals in Singapore. She opened play against Dominika Cibulkova. The world number 1 took the match in 3 sets, winning 7-6 (7-5) 2-6 6-3.
Kerber showed why she is the best in women’s tennis. Cibulkova, though experienced in her own right, makes her WTA Finals debut this season. The draw against the world number 1 is not an easy start for Cibulkova.

Other players in action on day one included Romanian tennis star Simona Halep. The 25-year-old Romanian faced American Madison Keys in round 1 action, defeating the young Keys 6-2 6-4.
Similar to Cibulkova, Keys also makes her debut at the WTA Finals in Singapore this season. After day 1 action, it is clear that veteran experience has the upper hand. Kerber and Halep both have significant big match experience. Halep is a former world number 2 with 3 titles on the 2016 season.
Kerber is closing out a 2016 season featuring wins at both the Australian and US Opens. She looks to cap off a stellar year with a win at Singapore.
Tuesday will now see matches featuring Kerber-Halep and Keys-Cibulkova in the Red Group. Monday also brings more early round action at the WTA Finals in Singapore. Stay tuned for coverage of other key early round matches.
