Angelique Kerber beats Caroline Wozniacki to reach U.S. Open final

Angelique Kerber beat Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets on Thursday night to reach the U.S. Open final.

Kerber, who will become the new No. 1 player on tour following Serena Williams's semifinal defeat on Thursday, will play in her third Grand Slam final of the season on Saturday when she faces Karolina Pliskova.

Kerber would have become the new No. 1 even if she had lost to Wozniacki on Thursday, but the No. 2 seed padded her new ranking with a 6-4, 6-3 semifinal win at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Prior to this year, Kerber's best finish at a Grand Slam was a pair of semifinals appearances, at the U.S. Open in 2011 and Wimbledon in 2012. She beat Williams in the final of this year's Australian Open and lost to Williams in July's Wimbledon final.

Pliskova beat Kerber in the final of last month's Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
