Andy Murray and Angelique Kerber are the two top ranked players in men’s and women’s tennis. On Tuesday, the International Tennis Federation named them the ITF singles players of the year.

Andy Murray breaks Novak Djokovic’s 5-year run as ITF world champion. The Scot is 2016’s ITF men’s singles champion. Ending the year as the world No. 1, it is only fitting that Murray be named ITF player of the year.

In women’s tennis, Angelique Kerber also finishes the year with the top ranking and becomes the women’s singles champion for the first time in her career.

Andy Murray joins his brother Jamie, along with his doubles partner Bruno Soares, to bring a second ITF world champion title to the Murray family in 2016. The Scot finished the year by defeating Djokovic for an ATP World Tour Finals title.

2016 also saw Murray winning a major tournament title at Wimbledon and an Olympic men’s singles gold medal in Rio.

Kerber won both the Australian Open and the US Open in 2016. She also earned a silver medal at the Olympics in Rio. The German tennis star overtook American Serena Williams for the world No. 1 ranking. She will be eager to defend her Australian Open title next month in Melbourne.

Both Murray and Kerber played consistent tennis throughout 2016. Momentum is on their side as they enter the 2017 season. If they remain healthy, both Murray and Kerber will be the players to beat in every early tournament in the upcoming season.
