Gasquet is the two-time defending champion at the tournament. He was also seeking his 15th career singles title this week. Zverev denied the French tennis player by upsetting him in straight sets.
Zverev won 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
He and his brother Mischa also clinched the doubles title at the tournament this week. Mischa is coming off of a stellar Australian Open run where he upset world No. 1 Andy Murray and fell to eventual champion Roger Federer.
The older Zverev celebrated their victories saying, “Congrats to my brother, winning singles and doubles for the first time. It’s always special playing doubles with him, especially playing well and winning. I’m really, really happy. I didn’t expect it.”
Alexander Zverev is without a doubt a player to watch throughout 2017.
He is playing some of his best tennis and represents a younger generation of players that will test the likes of Murray and Novak Djokovic. Now with two career singles titles in under a year, Zverev is right on track to continue rising in the rankings of men’s singles tennis.
