Zaragoza secures comeback victory
Abraham Fernandez scored an injury-time winner as bottom side Real Zaragoza produced a stunning late fightback to secure a 2-1 win against Villarreal.
The visitors had started the brighter and went in front after wonderful build up play from Nilmar and Javier Camunas left Alejandro Martinuccio with the simplest of finishes to score his first goal for the club.
Villarreal had chances to extend their lead in the first period but were sloppy after the break and they were made to pay when Luis Garcia fired in a wonderful volley from the edge of the area to equalise five minutes from time.
Carlos Marchena and Borja Valero then passed up good opportunities to take all three points for Villarreal, but it was the hosts who grabbed only their fourth victory of the season when the ball fell kindly to Abraham inside the area and he tucked the ball calmly past Diego Lopez.
Zaragoza came into the game 12 points behind Villarreal in the final slot above the relegation zone and that gap only looked like increasing during a first period in which the Yellow Submarine dominated.
Martinuccio scored the opener on 15 minutes after a fine through ball from Nilmar found Camunas and he unselfishly squared for the Argentinian to tap home.
Nilmar was then twice denied by good saves from Roberto Jimenez and Martinuccio also wastefully shot over when well positioned inside the area.
The home fans seemed more interested in protesting against owner Agapito Iglesias than the game itself, but they were given something to cheer by a battling performance from their side in the second-half.
Carlos Aranda was denied by a smart stop by Diego Lopez, although the offside flag had already gone up, before their reward arrived five minutes from time when Garcia bulleted in a shot from 18 yards for just his fourth goal of the campaign.
Villarreal immediately went back on the attack and should have retaken the lead on two occasions as Marchena headed wide when unmarked inside the area before Borja had an even better opportunity but shot straight at Roberto's legs from point-blank range.
And there was to be a final twist in the tale as with three minutes of stoppage time played, Aranda's pass was deflected into the path of Abraham who raced through to slot past Lopez.
