Yates praises Robins' efforts
Hamburg coach Thorsten Fink claims his side are "not mature enough" for the Europa League.
Hamburg's 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg left them three points adrift of sixth-placed Freiburg with two games of the season remaining.
A win would have given the northern German club hope of catching either Freiburg or Eintracht Frankfurt in the race for European places, but Fink realises his side simply are not yet ready for a return to international football.
"I think this was a fair draw," he said. "Both teams played an open game and wanted to win and I'm pleased with the way we fought, but technically it wasn't very good, there's no doubt about it.
"Of course it's going to be even tougher now to reach the Europa League.
"We are heading in the right direction in terms of stability, but we are not mature enough for the Europa League.
"We want to take this club right to the top, but you can only do that with continuity."
Continuity has been Hamburg's bugbear for the past two years with dramatic falls being followed by equally dramatic rises.
Yet whenever they are within touching distance of achieving something substantial, they appear to stutter.
"We need to be more consequential," said Fink to Sky television. "We need players who are willing to go the extra mile for this club."
After losing 1-0 at Northampton on Thursday night, Marlon Pack had the chance to level the semi-final tie in the 14th minute, but Lee Nicholls produced a fine save to keep out the midfielder's penalty.
Luke Guttridge's wonder strike doubled the Cobblers advantage and, after the Robins missed a host of chances, they held on for a 2-0 aggregate win to set up a final showdown with Bradford.
Yates said: "If we would have played all night we still wouldn't have scored but the town can be very proud of its players.
"Their goal was a great strike and Scott had no chance with it. We were the better team on the night and they were the better team last Thursday and unfortunately things haven't gone for us.
"Marlon is disappointed in the dressing room because he thinks he has let people down - there are tears pouring down his face. But Marlon Pack has been magnificent for the past three seasons at this football club.
"Tonight he stood up in front of a packed house and was brave enough to take a penalty. There were plenty of others who wanted it but he did it as he has all season and unfortunately the keeper's guessed the right way.
"The boys have to pick themselves up and have a good night out in Cheltenham. They have been fantastic all season. Our resources don't get near a lot of clubs in this division but that just shows how decent we are."
