WOLFSBURG, Germany -- Wolfsburg announced the expected signing of Germany forward Max Kruse from Bundesliga rival Borussia Moenchengladbach on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Kruse, who has made 11 appearances for Germany, signed a 4-year deal from next season through June 2019, Wolfsburg said in a statement.

''I'm happy to take the next step in my career at Wolfsburg,'' said Kruse, who helped Moenchengladbach defeat Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday to move provisionally above Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg reclaimed second place Sunday and is assured of Champions League football next season.

Both clubs agreed not to disclose the transfer fee, though German media reported that Kruse had a release clause of 12 million euros ($13.5 million).

''We're very happy that Max Kruse decided on a switch to Wolfsburg,'' Wolfsburg director Klaus Allofs said. ''He is the type of forward that was missing from our squad and he increases the quality and variety of our attack.''

Kruse scored 23 league goals and set up 20 more in 64 Bundesliga appearances for Moenchengladbach, which he joined in 2013. He previously played for Werder Bremen, St. Pauli and Freiburg.
