Denmark defender Simon Kjaer has joined Wolfsburg from Italian club Palermo on a four-year contract.

The Bundesliga club's announcement Thursday of 21-year-old Kjaer's arrival came just a week after it signed Germany defender Arne Friedrich from Hertha Berlin.

Kjaer joined Palermo from Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2008. He said the move to Wolfsburg offers him ``a chance to play at a top club - I think this is the right step for me now.''

Wolfsburg is embarking on its first season under English coach Steve McClaren. The team was the Bundesliga champion in the 2008-09 season but had one of the division's worst defensive records last term, conceding 58 goals in 34 matches.
