Wigan halts Liverpool's 4-game winning run
Struggling Wigan put the brakes on Liverpool's recent revival with a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Midfielder Raul Meireles netted his fourth goal in five games from Fabio Aurelio's cross in the 24th minute.
But Wigan equalized in the 65th when Steve Gohouri got the final touch on Antolin Alcaraz's flick, despite appearing to be in an offside position.
Liverpool had won four straight games in the league under new manager Kenny Dalglish. The Reds remain sixth in the standings, while Wigan is third from bottom.
The result could have been different had forward Luis Suarez enjoyed better fortune, hitting the post and the bar on his first start for Liverpool.
''We started well enough, pushed forward and scored a good goal by Raul again,'' Dalglish said. ''Luis hit the post but you could tell they had been playing Wednesday night a lot of them (for their countries).''
Liverpool was without both defender Daniel Agger and captain Steven Gerrard due to injuries.
''There was just that little bit of an edge missing and if they had had that the final pass would have been better,'' Dalglish said. ''I think there were three or four occasions in the first half we would have been in, but the sharpness was just missing a bit, which is understandable.''
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was pleased with his team's fighting spirit.
''If you go 1-0 down after playing well that is really difficult but I was really pleased in the first half,'' he said. ''We had long spells of possession but we probably didn't show that real belief that we needed to show against a team like Liverpool.
''But going into halftime with that feeling we could do a little bit better I thought the reaction was great. I felt we deserved the point for the roles we had to go through and the players deserve huge credit.''
